Things have changed

It has been 10 weeks since we were supposed to have the surf school open for season 2020 and it has been a long winter for us. We are now finally planning to reopen and we’re super excited to finally get the season kicked off.

In line with the recent government announcement, we’re working towards opening for lessons and hire on July 4th and are currently taking new reservations. We are of course aware that this is a conditional date and subject to government confirmation and maybe subject to change. 

Following the Covid pandemic, our priority was to ensure our staff were fully informed and we have worked hard with our pre-booked clients to ensure we have kept them up to date as much as possible. This hasn’t always been easy with such a fluid situation that has been changing often on a daily basis. Our team has been working hard to provide flexibility to clients whose bookings have been cancelled and we have issued full refunds when requested. We’re very grateful for the patience and understanding everyone has shown as we’ve navigated this challenge.

Happy and healthy

But through it all, we’ve missed you. We’ve missed the smell of the ocean, the beautiful weather and the fantastic surf that has been hitting the North Cornish coast recently. We missed seeing happy smiley faces. Harlyn has been looking absolutely stunning in this recent run of amazing weather and we can’t wait for you to return. 

So once our teams were safe and our guests updated, our minds quickly turned to the future – and how we would get back to a world of welcoming guests again, while knowing that our business would have to change.

Health and safety is always our absolute priority. Over the coming weeks we will adjust to new ways of doing things and take our measures to the next level so that guests, visitors and teams continue to have assurance of our full commitment in this regard. We have updated our policies and risk assessments and have gained the WSA Covid Care Quality Assurance Badge. This is an industry leading award and is recognition that we have the safety of our staff, our clients and our community at heart. We have put in place new sanitisation procedures and have changed the way the business will operate for season 2020. 

However, there’s a balance to strike, and it’s important that we carry out our adjustments in a way that’s true to who we are and what we believe in. Now more than ever, people need the time and space to be at their happiest. Helping you find these moments is, and always will be, at the heart of what we do.

We’re still shaping exactly what our adjustments look like and what it will mean and our website and social media channels will be the first source of information.  Our adjustments will include new hire and check in procedures and key points. All of our activities will be available but some on a more limited offering than normal. In the meantime, please read on for an overview of some key things we are working on.

Guidance and best practice

We’re following all government guidelines and have been actively involved in scoping out industry best practice in partnership with key outdoor industry bodies and specialists. Once confirmed, we’ll complete all necessary assessments and certification to validate our policies. 

Our teams, supply chains and partners

We’ll ensure that everyone involved in our business is fully aware of and committed to our ethos. This includes:

  • Every team member will be trained in new operating procedures and we will trial run sessions including meet and greet, kitting out clients, session delivery, kit sanitisation and first aid procedures. 
  • Our team will be trained in new health and hygiene related procedures and their responsibility to customers and colleagues.
  • We’ll take all reasonable steps to follow the government’s Covid-19 Secure Workplace Guidelines.
  • We will supply all necessary PPE. 

    Our teams, supply chains and partners

We’ll share as much information as possible to provide assurance and transparency:

  • We’ll update our booking communications to provide additional information relating to health and hygiene.
  • Where possible we will try and get as many sessions pre-booked in advance and will encourage and promote this through our communication channels.
  • New signage and focus points will be added at our beach base to promote hygiene and social distancing.

Cleaning

A new risk-based approach to cleaning will be implemented and all team members will be trained accordingly. Hand sanitiser will be available at check in areas including check in areas. We welcome and encourage customer use of this prior to touching kit or browsing any shop items.

Social distancing

We will maximise our outdoor areas to create more space for clients.  We’ll also promote a ‘one way’ client flow through to the hire desk/checking in area at the beach to maintain social distancing and to limit the number of people queuing at any one time.

Capacity

We’ll adhere to restrictions relating to instructor/pupil ratios for season 2020. We will adhere to government and industry guidelines to ensure we are following best practice.

Our Activities

We will take all the necessary steps to ensure that we deliver our sessions abiding to social distancing rules. We will ensure that kit is properly sanitised and safe to use. For info on our season 2020 activities click here (hyperlink) 

Our Facilities

  • Our beach unit will be off limits to our clients and is only to be accessed by our staff at this time.
  • The RNLI lifeguard service will be in place as normal from June 20th 2020
  • We will have a contact tracing system in place
  • Card payment facilities will be available and will be preferred method of payment although we will accept cash.

The Future

We remain excited about future opportunities to grow and innovate at Harlyn Surf School and we have plans to reshape the business and vary our offerings. Although Covid has presented significant challenges to us as a small business and the way we move forward we are super positive to adapt to these changes and really look forward to seeing many new and returning faces.

Bookings

Where possible we encourage advance bookings online.  This will help us to plan our staffing at this difficult time. Please check the list of activities that we have available – you will be able to book these via the book now buttons against each product. We are sorry we cannot offer all of our usual products for season 2020 but we are pleased to announce that most products are available. Thank you for your patience.
