Surf Instructor Training

LEVEL 1 -- This is the official entry level qualification required to work as a surf instructor for UK surf schools and is open to candidates age 16+.  This is a 2 day course split into theory and practical sessions and covers the following topics; The role of the surf coach, safety in surfing, practical coaching of beginner surfers, coaching children, equity and diversity. Candidates must be able to demonstrate a basic surfing ability which will be assessed.

On the satisfactory completion of 40 hours work experience and final assessment by a Level 2 coach candidates will then be able to teach ABC surf lessons to a group of 10 by themselves as long as there is level 2 coach to supervise.  After a further 120hrs candidates will then be eligible to take the level 2 qualification.

For those candidates who wish to complete their probationary 40 hours work experience and final ABC assessment, Saltwater Training has places available at Harlyn Surf School. We may also have seasonal positions available for those candidates who are looking for employment. Included in the course fees are training manuals, certification, 1 years BSA Coaches membership including public liability insurance. We offer a combined course covering both awards.  If you have a coaching qualification in a different sport or you have a recognised teaching qualification then you may qualify for Accredited prior Learning and be able to move straight to a Level 2 course. LEVEL 2

This 3 day course is aimed at individuals who have a Level 1 award and have been coaching for a minimum of 6 months and are looking to further enhance their coaching skills. Course content; Health and Safety, coaching children and child protection, long term athlete development, fitness for surfing, improver lesson plans and performance evaluation.

Candidates will be assessed on their personal surfing ability and should be able to confidently ride waves both left and right in control at all times. They will need to demonstrate both top and bottom turns, paddling out techniques, positioning in the line up, etiquette and general surf knowledge. Minimum age is 18
