The 5 day Beach Lifeguard Qualification is a professional qualification backed by the Surf Life Saving GB. It allows successful trainees to work as lifeguards on British beaches and is also valid in many countries worldwide. As well as working in beach lifeguarding, the qualification is a stepping stone to other careers in outdoor pursuits, rescue management and emergency services. What are the entry requirements? -- You must must be physically fit and able to swim 400 metres in under 7 minutes 30 seconds, (the first 200m in under 3 mins 30 secs) as well as run 200m on the beach in under 40 seconds.
Who is this lifeguard course aimed at? -- People who want to work as beach lifeguards, surf instructors, outdoor pursuits instructors or embark on careers in rescue and emergency care.
What will I be doing on the lifeguard course? -- Successful students will have to demonstrate their knowledge and capabilities in the following core competencies; Lifeguarding Theory, CPR, First Aid, Spinal management and open Water Skills including board and tube rescue
Do I need to have experience? -- Previous experience is desirable but not essential as all training will be provided during the course. Having basic board skills and a knowledge of the beach and ocean environments will help.
How and where do I study the lifeguard course? -- The course takes place at Harlyn Bay near Padstow and runs from a Monday – Friday with the exam on the Saturday.
How old do I have to be? -- Candidates must be age 16 on the day of the exam.
Do you offer accommodation? -- We can recommend accommodation providers in the immediate area.
How much is the lifeguard course fee and what does it include? -- £295 including SLSA membership, training manual, exam fee and certification.
What is the difference between the Beach Lifeguard course and the Surf Coach Lifesaver Award?
The Surf Coach Lifesaver Award is specifically designed for surf coaches who need to have a lifesaving qualification. It cannot be used to apply for beach lifeguard positions.
What can I do after the lifeguard course? -- The beach lifeguard qualification allows you to work as a lifeguard on beaches in Britain and is valid in many countries worldwide. It is also a stepping stone onto other courses and careers in rescue and emergency management.
