Frequently Asked Questions

Is coasteering safe?

Safety when you are coasteering is our top priority. We have extensive knowledge of this stretch of the North Cornwall coast, having grown up in the area and spending our youth exploring the coastline and surfing on the local beaches. We have been running a very successful surf school at Harlyn for over 15 years and we are also proud to be one of only a handful of Surf Life Saving GB Accredited Lifeguard Training Centres in the UK

All of our staff are CRB checked, qualified surf lifesavers, first aiders, experienced in surf coaching and working with children. They are all personally trained by our company owner Chris Rea who has extensive experience in surfing, paddleboarding and coasteering. Cornwall is a great place to try out all these exhilarating activities. You can be confident you will be led by truly inspirational instructors and the quality of instruction and safety knowledge you will enjoy at Harlyn Surf School is second to none,

So whether you want a coasteering holiday or just a one-off session to experience this great activity, Harlyn Surf School is the first choice for coasteering in Cornwall.

What’s the location for coasteering?

We operate our coasteering sessions from Harlyn beach , near Padstow on the North Cornish coast. We have a North and a South route so you can always make the most of coasteering. Cornwall is rich in amazing beaches but Harlyn is certainly one of the very best. Harlyn has an amazing crescent shaped bay, with a gently shelving beach and it is widely recognised as the safest beach in the Padstow, Trevone and St Merryn area. The beach at Harlyn is lifeguard patrolled and there are car parking facilities and refreshments on hand. Harlyn really is the most perfect location for coasteering.

Are there any restrictions on who can take part in coasteering?

We offer coasteering for adults and for children, min age as a guideline isn10yrs old but we do take younger children on our coasteering sessions if the conditions are appropriate and they are confident swimmers. U 14’s must be accompanied by an adult unless pre-arranged). You don’t need to have previous experience of coasteering and you don’t need to be an outdoor adventure person, just come with a “go for it” attitude and prepare for a coasteering adventure. We offer coasteering routes to suit the conditions and your ability. These coasteering routes have been accurately risk assessed so you can be sure there is a perfect balance between maximum exhilaration and maximum safety.

Do I need to be fit for coasteering?

To make the most of a coasteering holiday, we ask that you have a reasonable general level of fitness i.e you should be able to run up and down the stairs without feeling faint or short of breath.

What are the swimming requirements?

To take part in coasteering, we do not expect you to be Olympic swimmers but you must be able to swim a minimum of 25m in a pool without stopping. We supply you with a wetsuit, helmet, boots and buoyancy aid.

What shall I bring with me for coasteering?

When you come coasteering at Harlyn Surf School, please bring a towel, swimwear for underneath your wetsuit, an old pair of trainers or wetsuit shoes (we do have wetsuit boots) and warm clothing for after your coasteering experience. Refreshment facilities are available at the beach.

Can I wear my own wetsuit?

Yes, you can wear your own wetsuit for coasteering so long as it is a full length suit that covers your whole body and is of the appropriate thickness for the time of year.  It is best to check its suitability with us before you arrive.

Can I wear my glasses when coasteering?

No, we advise you to wear disposable contacts

What are the maximum and minimum numbers?

We require a minimum of 4 people for the coasteering activity to take place. We cater for larger groups as well and for more than one group at a time using a staggered start system.
